چکیده

This paper builds a bridge between research on regulatory focus in motivation and classification learning. It tests the hypothesis that a promotion focus leads to greater cognitive flexibility than a prevention focus and that the fit between the regulatory focus-induced processing characteristics and the nature of the environment influence performance. Experiment 1’s environment is one in which a high level of cognitive flexibility should be advantageous and Experiment 2’s environment is one in which a high level of cognitive flexibility should be disadvantageous. As predicted, promotion focus participants showed better learning in Experiment 1 but worse learning in Experiment 2. Model-based analyses indicated that qualitative shifts in strategy from simple uni-dimensional rules to complex conjunctive rules were associated with the superior performance of promotion focused subjects observed in Experiment 1. The deficit observed for promotion focus participants in Experiment 2 was due to highly variable criterion memory and trial-to-trial placement. Implications for current theories of motivation and classification learning are discussed.

Regulatory Fit and Classification Learning 1 A Test of the Regulatory Fit Hypothesis in Perceptual Classification Learning

This paper builds a bridge between research on regulatory focus in motivation and classification learning. It tests the hypothesis that a fit between the situational regulatory focus and the reward structure of the task leads to greater cognitive flexibility than a mismatch between situational focus and the reward structure and that the fit between the regulatory focusinduced processing charact...

A test of the regulatory fit hypothesis in perceptual classification learning.

This article builds a bridge between research on regulatory focus in motivation and classification learning. It tests the hypothesis that a fit between the situational regulatory focus and the reward structure of the task leads to greater cognitive flexibility than does a mismatch between situational focus and the reward structure and that the fit between the regulatory-focus-induced processing...

Regulatory Fit 1 Running head: REGULATORY FIT AND LEARNING Differential Effects of Regulatory Fit on Category Learning

Motivation affects the degree to which people engage in tasks as well as the processes that they bring to bear. We explore the proposal that a fit between a person’s situationally-induced selfregulatory focus and the reward structure of the task that they are pursuing supports greater flexibility in processing than does a mismatch between regulatory focus and reward structure. In two experiment...

Regulatory Fit Effects in a Nonlinearly Separable Category Learning Task

The regulatory fit-cognitive flexibility hypothesis was tested in two experiments using a non-linearly separable category set, where cognitive flexibility was hypothesized to be advantageous for category learning. A promotion or a prevention focus was induced and subjects performed the task with either a gains or losses reward structure, creating two conditions of regulatory fit (promotion/gain...
